Enter the Fat Dragon (1978)
Starring: Sammo Hung, Yeung Kwan, Meg Lam Kin-ming, Leung Kar Yan
Featuring: Fung Fung, Lee Hoi-san, Fung Hak-on, Roy Chiao
Bruce Lee enthusiast - Ah Lung (Sammo Hung) travels to Hong Kong to work in his uncles restaurant. Ah Lung may be a little clumsy and busts out his fist of fury’s at the drop of a hat, his uncle is obviously against his nephews “violence is the answer” attitude, because every time Ah Lung gets into a fight, his uncle ends up getting all the trouble afterwards.
After his uncles food stall being trashed, he gets a job in a local restaurant with some people he’s befriended. Trouble arises when one of his friends is kidnapped by a spiteful millionaire, Ah Lung is left to pick up the pieces and save the day, Bruce Lee Style!
When watching Hong Kong Cinema, nothing could be better than watching in awe as Sammo Hung throwing around high spinning kicks and giggling at the goofy high jinks that Sammo seems to find himself in constantly.
If you haven’t guessed this movie plays mostly off of the legendary Bruce Lee movies. I think the title is the most obvious reference, the storyline of the country bumpkin traveling to work in his uncles restaraunt is the obvious storyline taken from “Way of the Dragon”.
Being a Sammo Hung movie you also get the fun mini-game of spotting at the stuntman extras who went on to better things. We’re constantly treated to brief appearances from Yuen Biao, Mang Hoi, Billy Chan, Chung Fat, Mars and my personal favorite Lam Ching-ying.
Other notable actors in the movie include; a fashionable Eric Tsang, Roy Chiao plays a bad guy, who isn’t that bad actually. Leung Kar-yan and Lee Hoi-san both play big fighters at the end of the movie, although Lee Hoi-san is kited out to look like a black guy, yes they painted him. Fung Hak-on appears as his usual sleaze ball bad guy.
Final thoughts, after seeing at least 20-30 Sammo Hung movies in my time I deeply regret not seeing Enter the Fat Dragon sooner!
