Her Name is Cat (1998)

Her Name is Cat

Director: Clarence Fok

Starring: Almen Wong, Michael Wong, Lowell Chik,

Featuring: Chong Wing, Ben Lam, Kenix Kwok, Sunny Chan

Mainland assassin Ying known as Cat (Almen Wong) carries out a series of hits on local triad bosses. Senior cop and impromptu identikit artist John Cannon (Michael Wong), investigates the aftermath of each crime and promptly picks up her trail.

Aware that she is being tailed by this somewhat lonesome cop, our Cat turns the tables, following him to his flat, around town and even plays with his daughter in the park. But things aren’t all cup noodles and killings for our heroine when a hit on a politician goes sour and her ex from the mainland arrives in town. And she gets involved with John.

The film is nicely cast and both stars seem comfortable with their roles. The film looks wonderful with some fantastic cinematography and choreography. The first 20-30 minutes are extremely entertaining and it’s quite something to see the stars pull off some of the action cliches and dialogues with straight faces. But by the halfway point the pace drops off to make this film become more of a run-of-the-mill actioner with a few holes in logic. Nonetheless, it’s all worth watching.

Almen Wong is so under-used and Michael Wong as the token Gwailo is sooooooooo funny!
