Jaycee Chan First Western Interview
When Bruce Lee passed away all to sudden in 1973 - all eyes in the Martial Arts Movie World focused on his only son - Brandon. Brandon like his Father was an exceptional Martial Artist and a superstar in the making. He too went before his time in 1993 after an accident on the set of The Crow.
Now in the public eye in Hong Kong and across Asia is a new young face who is making a name for himself in both the Movie and Music Industry. Like Brandon Lee, Jaycee Chan has a famous Father and in terms of Hong Kong, Asia and World Cinema is Father is still at the Number One position and has been there for many years.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to guess who Jaycee’s Father is when you read the two initials built into his Christian name - “J.C. - and looking at his picture you can clearly see he has a striking resemblance to his Father back in the 70s when he originally became the massive star he is now after making films such as Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master - Yes, we are, of course, talking about Jackie Chan.
Jaycee’s, film debut in Twins Effect 2 for Emperor Films was very well received by the Asian audiences. He followed up his first acting role by releasing his own music CD aptly name “Jaycee and then starred in the teen-romance drama 2 Young alongside singer turned actress Fiona Sit.
Currently, Jaycee is hard at work in China working on Jiang Wen’s Where the Sun Rises, where he co-stars alongside Rosamund Kwan and Anthony Wong. Jade Screen Editor Richard Cooper caught up with Jaycee recently to conduct what in fact turns out to be Jaycee’s very first Western interview.
Jade Screen: Jaycee, tell me - how did you get the role in Twins Effect 2?
Jaycee Chan: After I put out an album in Hong Kong with EEG they decided that it would be a good idea to put in me a movie because all the Hong Kong artists at the time normally have to have both singing and acting as their careers. I was lucky enough to get this role in Twins Effect 2 with The Twins, other great people and of course, my Dad even though I didn’t have any chance to appear in any of the same scenes with him.
JS: Twins Effect 2 was your film debut - what was it like working on such a big budget film?
JC: Big budget and very confusing! I say confusing because I was working with so many big artists and stars. In fact even the Director got a bit confused at times too! (Laughing). The shoot was also very hectic too but I did learn lots of things from everyone involved in the movie and I would say that Tony Leung taught me the most out of all though.
JS: In the film 2 Young - your character showed much more depth. How did you find working with a Director like Derek Yee?
JC: He is a one of a kind Director, really. I say that because not a lot of Directors in Hong Kong were also such big stars themselves previously, and he is definitely one of them.
JS: Were you satisfied with your CD release in Asia?
JC: Not really - I think we did quite a bad job on my first CD cover! Maybe because Hong Kong is so used to making idols into pretty boys which I am not (Laughing). I don’t have the face or the heart to be one at all. I think the only thing I am happy about with the CD is I said what I wanted to say with my lyrics and the people of China are OK with it.
JS: Which is more important to you? Your acting career or music career?
JC: Actually, both right now! Really, because they are totally different jobs and careers. Although, I do know much more about music. But that is also why I want to learn more acting and about the film industry and hopefully learn from other good actors and Directors.
