Of course I don’t know about the story and haven’t seen the film either, but Jetli in the role of the Monkey King looks like “Hanuman” in the Hindu “Rama and Sita”; Hanuman is always very courageous/brave with great power and agility, righteous, compassionate and Hanuman is a white monkey. I think Jetli is somehow like Hanuman too.

Actually people do speculate that the Monkey King might have been based off of Hanuman. The Monkey King is from the Chinese novel “Journey to the West” written around 16th century A.D. The novel is based on the journey of a real monk, who lived during 7th century A.D., and who traveled from China to India and back by land to study Buddhism. “Journey to the West” is the most famous novel based on the monk’s journey, and it features an extremely powerful monkey king named Sun Wukong. There are other less known novels based on the same journey written before “Journey to the West”, and some of them also have a powerful monkey character. We don’t really know where this powerful monkey character came from, but it’s quite likely that the monk knew of Hanuman from his stay in India, and told people in China stories about him when he got back. I don’t think “Journey to the West” ever mentions the Monkey King’s colour though. He was supposedly born/weathered from a rock, and before he became the monkey king people called him “stone monkey”. So he might be…gray? Speckled? Marble?

I have had the chance to check out htis movie and its a movie i’d highly recommend, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li play great roles, for many years Jackie has avoided playing the Drunken Master role, which he has once again played in this movie, and i have to say, it was AWESOME!
To be honest i don’t know if anyone could fill the feeling of the role the way Jackie has..
And not to mention Jet Li’s role of the bad ass monk, and the way passed cool Monkey King..
I have to agree with one of the post saying this is the first time seeing Jet Li play a comical role, but the role was well played..
I would for sure say this is a movie for everyone, from children, all the way to the adults..
Although a outside glance can leave a person thinking maybe this movie is a little bit corny, believe me, thats the last thing it is, well even if it is corny, its well worth the time..

I remember watching Journey to the west as a child, but my memories of it aren’t too strong, only remembering the very basics of the story and whatnot, but from what i remember and what i hear today, this movie has without a doubt a high position in my top favorite movies..
