Monga: Taiwanese Gangster Cinema

MongaGangsters and street violence are the name of the game in a new full length trailer for Taiwanese thriller Monga, helmed by actor turned director Doze Niu. Even before its opening the film has already courted some online controversy, when some local officials objected to an early teaser trailers negative portrayal of Taipei’s ancient district of “Monga,” complaining it mainly featured gangster fights and brothel scenes.

Does make you wonder, just exactly what they were expecting from a movie about Triad gangs?? No doubt adding a great boost to tickets sales Taiwanese pop idol Ethan Ruan leads the cast in the story of five teenagers who get dragged into gang rivalries, following the end of Taiwan’s military dictatorship in the 1980s. Monga is set to receive the widest release ever for a local film in Taiwan, when Warner Bros opens it on February 5th. Check out the Trailer below.
