The Jackie Chan Science Centre Opens

science-centre-with-rudd.jpgThe Jackie Chan Science Centre is a new science education centre at the Australian National University in Canberra, made possible by Jackie. The Centre will showcase the research of the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the University.

Back in 2002, Jackie first made a donation to cancer research at the university in memory of his late mother, Lee Lee Chan. In 2006 he made another large donation which made the Jackie Chan Science Centre possible. Jackie told the press, “My father passed away last week. So it is about time I did something for Canberra to remember my parents. I really thank you Australia and Canberra for taking care of my parents for 46 years…. As my father told me, say less, do more.”

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was present at the opening of the centre. He and Jackie have been friends for several years and share a similar background when it comes to their early years in Canberra. Mr Rudd said, “In the 1970s in Canberra we both lived here and we were both builders’ labourers. He did the work of three men for one year. I lasted for 24 hours.” Jackie told the press, “I’ve known Kevin for a few years.” He also mentioned that the two had dinner together the night before and talked about the environment, Chinese-Australian relations and “some secret I cannot say yet.”
